Chapter 51 - A New Kind of Intimacy

The sun had set, casting a gentle twilight over Wren’s room. The earlier tension seemed to have eased, and Connor, noticing Wren’s improved mood after their heartfelt talk, decided it was the right moment to address something he’d been contemplating.

“Wren,” Connor began tentatively.

“Yeah?” Wren replied, looking up from her book with a curious glance.

Connor’s hesitation was palpable. He rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks turning a faint shade of pink. The sight of him so nervous made Wren’s heart flutter with concern.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, her worry evident in her voice.

Connor took a deep breath, his eyes darting away as if searching for the right words. “I... I was wondering if I could sleep in here with you tonight?”

Wren’s eyes widened in surprise. The question hung in the air, leaving her momentarily stunned. Her heart raced at the thought of him being in her room all night, so close. It wasn’t the first time he had slept with her—he’d been there before during her nightmares. Yet, tonight felt different.

Her mind whirled with conflicting emotions. Part of her was scared of the intimacy implied by sharing a bed, while another part wondered why she felt this way.

Should I say yes? I’m supposed to work on intimacy, but this feels a bit fast.

Connor, noticing her hesitation, began to second-guess himself. “Um… never mind. Pretend I didn’t ask anything.”

His face fell, a mix of sadness and self-reproach washing over him. Wren’s heart ached seeing him like this. She wondered if her indecision had hurt him, if he felt rejected or unwanted.

Maybe I hurt him because I didn’t answer right away. He probably thinks I don’t like him enough.

Summoning her courage, Wren surprised him with her response. “Okay… you can stay with me.”

Connor’s eyes widened in shock. “Really? Are you sure?”

Wren nodded, her voice soft but resolute. “Yes.”

Connor’s relief was palpable, but he added quickly, “I don’t want you to think I’m pushing you into it.”

“It’s okay,” Wren reassured him. “I know you don’t mean anything bad.”

“I promise I won’t do anything to make you feel uncomfortable,” Connor said earnestly.

“I know you won’t,” Wren replied with a reassuring smile.

Connor’s expression softened. “I just want to be near you. I miss you when I’m not close to you.”

Wren’s heart warmed at his words. She couldn’t help but find his nervousness endearing. He was so earnest in his desire to be close to her, and it melted her doubts.

“Come here,” Wren said, her voice gentle but firm.

Connor moved slowly towards her, his eyes locked on hers with a mixture of anticipation and hope. When he was close enough, Wren waved her hand for him to lean down.

As he bent down, their faces were inches apart. Wren felt a flutter of nerves but also excitement. I can’t believe I’m doing this, but he is just too cute!

Without overthinking, she quickly leaned forward and pressed her lips to his cheek, leaving a warm, lingering kiss. The sensation was brief but filled with affection.

Connor’s eyes widened in astonishment. A beaming smile spread across his face, his heart racing. She kissed me! OMG! She really kissed me!

“Is that a good enough answer for you?” Wren asked with a playful glint in her eyes.

Connor stood upright, still in a state of shock and happiness. He nodded vigorously, unable to contain his grin.

Wren laughed lightly, enjoying the sight of his elation. “Let’s get ready for bed,” she said, her voice filled with warmth and anticipation.

They moved to prepare for the night, the air between them charged with a new kind of intimacy. Wren’s heart swelled with a mixture of nervous excitement and burgeoning affection as she led him to the bed. The night promised new closeness and understanding, and as they settled in, the shared space between them felt like a bridge to a deeper connection.
