Chapter 4 - Back To the Present In the Dark

The muffled ringing of Wren’s phone seemed to come from a distant place, barely cutting through the haze of pain and confusion that engulfed her. Desperately, she tried to stand, but her legs trembled and buckled beneath her. She collapsed back onto the bed, her body feeling heavy and uncooperative.

Breathing deeply to steady herself, Wren attempted to rise once more. The effort was almost too much, but she managed to drag herself across the room, her movements unsteady and fraught with exhaustion. Finally, she reached the phone, her trembling fingers fumbling to answer.

“He… hello,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, choked with fear and exhaustion.

“Wren, what’s wrong?” Stormi’s voice crackled through the receiver, laced with concern. “Why does your voice sound like that?”

Wren’s composure shattered as she began to cry, her voice breaking. “Stormi… please help me.”

“Oh my God! What’s wrong?” Stormi’s voice was frantic. “I’ll be there soon. Wait for me.”

With a final burst of strength, Wren managed to hang up and quickly texted Stormi the resort’s name and her room number. Her hands were slick with sweat, making it difficult to type, but she succeeded before collapsing onto the bed, tears streaming down her face.

Half an hour later, a firm knock echoed through the room. Wren struggled to her feet, wrapping herself in a sheet, feeling exposed and vulnerable. She stumbled to the door and opened it, revealing Stormi’s worried face. As Stormi stepped inside, Wren fell into her arms, the dam of her emotions breaking completely.

Stormi took in the horrific sight before her: Wren was covered in blood and bruises, her beautiful dress now a tattered memory. She held Wren close, her voice a soft murmur of concern. “My poor baby… What happened to you?”

Wren’s sobs came in ragged gasps. “Tre… Trevor happened to me.”

Stormi’s eyes flared with anger. “I warned you he was no good.”

“Please don’t yell at me,” Wren pleaded through her tears. “Just… just help me.”

Stormi’s expression softened as she gently guided Wren towards the bathroom. “Shh… don’t cry. I’m sorry. Let’s get you cleaned up.”

Inside the bathroom, Stormi turned on the shower, the sound of rushing water filling the space with a soothing, almost cleansing rhythm. She helped Wren onto a shower seat and began to carefully bathe her, her movements tender but filled with fury. Each mark, each bruise on Wren’s skin seemed to ignite a fire within her—Trevor would pay for this, she vowed silently.

“Let’s report him to the police,” Stormi suggested, her voice hard with determination.

“No,” Wren said, her voice trembling with fear. “He threatened me. He said if I told anyone, he’d come back for more.”

Stormi’s face contorted with rage. “That bastard! How dare he threaten you after what he did.”

Wren’s voice was barely a whisper as she shook her head. “Please… just let it go. I don’t want to remember this. I want to forget it ever happened.”

Stormi’s heart ached at her friend’s plea. “Oh, sweetie, it will be hard to forget. Are you sure?”

Wren nodded weakly, her eyes pleading for understanding. “Yes.”

“Alright,” Stormi said softly, her anger now tempered with sadness. “Let’s get your bags and go home.”

As Stormi helped Wren gather her belongings, the reality of what had happened began to sink in. The beautiful weekend that was supposed to be a celebration of their love had turned into a nightmare. But for now, Stormi’s focus was on getting her friend to safety and providing the support she so desperately needed.
