Chapter 6 - Unspoken Concerns

Later that day, Riley spotted his older brother, Conner, in the bustling student center. The sight of his sibling immediately lifted his spirits, though a sense of unease still lingered in his mind.

“Hey, Bro,” Riley called out, waving as he approached.

Conner looked up from his phone, a warm smile spreading across his face. “Hi. What are you up to?”

“Nothing much,” Riley replied, shrugging.

Conner’s eyes darted around. “Where are your friends?”

Riley’s expression shifted slightly. “Stormi is in class and Wren is at home sick.”

Conner’s brow furrowed with concern. “Sick? Is she okay?”

“I guess, but something seems odd,” Riley admitted, his voice tinged with uncertainty.

Conner’s interest piqued. “What seems odd?”

Riley hesitated. “Wren has been absent for a week. When I asked Stormi, she seemed like she was lying about Wren being sick.”

Conner’s concern deepened. “Maybe go check on her and visit.”

Riley shook his head. “Stormi called her a little bit ago and asked if we could stop by. Wren said no, she was sleeping.”

Conner frowned. “Maybe you’re overthinking it.”

“Maybe,” Riley conceded. “But I have this feeling that something feels off.”

Conner’s gaze softened. “You want me to go with you and visit anyway?”

Riley looked thoughtful. “Let’s wait a few days and see if she comes to classes first.”

“Okay,” Conner agreed. “I have to go to the company. Dad wants to see me.”

Riley chuckled. “That’s my cue to leave.”

Conner smirked. “You can’t run from responsibility forever.”

Riley laughed. “Yes, I can.” He turned and jogged away, leaving Conner with his thoughts.

Conner watched his brother disappear into the distance and then turned his attention back to Wren. His heart ached with worry. Wren had always been a vibrant and beautiful girl, someone who rarely fell ill. Seeing her out of sorts was unsettling.

Please be okay, Conner thought, I couldn’t stand it if something happened to you.

Conner’s feelings for Wren were deep-seated and complicated. He had been quietly in love with her for five years, ever since he first met her through Riley. Though he was three years older, Conner never felt it was appropriate to pursue her. Instead, he kept his feelings hidden, content to watch her from afar and support her happiness.

Last year, when Wren began dating Trevor, Conner’s heartache became palpable. He had to endure the sight of her smiling up at Trevor, holding hands, and sharing moments that he wished were his. The growing distance between them was a constant reminder of what he couldn’t have.

As Conner’s thoughts wandered, he suddenly noticed Trevor by the building, laughing and kissing a blonde-haired girl. The scene struck Conner like a cold slap. What the hell is going on? he wondered. Is he cheating on Wren? Did they break up? Maybe that’s why she has been absent from school.

Conner’s heart raced as he watched the unsettling interaction. He needed to talk to Riley and piece together what was happening. There was a deep sense of urgency to understand the truth behind Wren’s absence and Trevor’s apparent betrayal.

With a heavy heart, Conner resolved to confront his brother later and get to the bottom of the situation. Wren’s well-being was at stake, and he couldn’t ignore the nagging suspicion that something was terribly wrong.
