Chapter 25 - Please Don’t Run Again

The hospital room was a stark contrast to the chaos of the outside world. Soft, sterile lighting bathed the space, and the steady beeping of medical equipment created a rhythmic background. Wren had just been examined by the doctor, her body showing fewer signs of physical abuse than the emotional scars that ran deeper than anyone could fully understand.

Connor sat by her side, his face etched with concern as the doctor delivered his recommendations. “She’s more traumatized than physically harmed,” the doctor said, his tone professional but empathetic. “I recommend she see a psychiatrist and take some medication for depression. We need to monitor her closely to ensure she doesn’t harm herself.”

Wren’s eyes were distant, her spirit battered. As the doctor left, she turned to Connor with a forced smile. “You can go home now. I am fine.”

Connor’s expression hardened, his voice firm. “You are definitely not fine. I will stay and take care of you.”

Wren shook her head, her voice tinged with resignation. “You don’t need to waste your time. I’m not worth it.”

Connor’s gaze was resolute, his tone brooking no argument. “I don’t want to hear those words again. Quit fighting me and let me take care of you.”

With a weary sigh, Wren acquiesced. “Fine.”

The door to the hospital room swung open, and Stormi and Riley rushed in, their faces a mix of concern and relief.

“Oh my gosh… How are you?” Stormi’s voice was filled with anguish as she approached Wren’s bed.

Riley’s gaze shifted to his brother, a silent question in his eyes. “Is everything okay?”

Wren managed a weak smile, the effort more a mask than a reflection of her true state. “I’m fine. Just a little rattled.”

Stormi’s eyes flashed with anger. “I can’t believe that jerk kidnapped you!”

Connor stepped in, his tone measured but concerned. “She will be fine. The doctor said she needs lots of rest and for us to keep an eye on her.”

Wren tried to reassure them. “You guys, I’m fine.”

“No, you aren’t,” Stormi retorted, her voice sharp with frustration. “No one would be fine after what you’ve been through.”

Riley nodded, his voice steady. “Yeah. Just let us take care of you.”

Wren’s shoulders slumped, her eyes clouded with self-loathing. “I don’t deserve it.”

Stormi’s face reddened with anger. “What do you mean?”

Wren’s voice trembled. “You guys shouldn’t waste your time on trash like me.”

“Wren!” Stormi’s tone was a mix of shock and hurt.

“Stop saying awful stuff like that!” Riley’s voice was a plea.

Connor’s voice cut through the tension, his emotion raw. “You are not trash, but treasure to me. Hush and stop saying words like that.”

Wren’s control broke, her tears flowing freely. She sobbed uncontrollably, her face buried in her hands.

“I don’t deserve you guys,” she choked out between sobs.

Connor moved swiftly, his arms enveloping her in a protective embrace. His hand gently rubbed her back, a soothing gesture meant to offer comfort. “Shush. Don’t cry, my sunshine. I’m here and will not let anything happen to you again.”

Stormi and Riley stood by, their faces softening with compassion. “We are all here and love you,” Stormi said, her voice a gentle plea. “Stop fighting us.”

Riley’s voice was firm yet kind. “Let us take care of you. You are still my best friend.”

Wren’s sobs gradually subsided, her body sinking into exhaustion. She slumped against Connor, her eyelids growing heavy. The overwhelming emotions and the comfort of Connor’s embrace lulled her into a deep sleep.

As she drifted off, Connor held her close, his resolve unwavering. The room, filled with the soft sounds of concern and love, became a sanctuary—a place where, for now, she was safe and cared for, a place where she didn’t have to run anymore.
