Chapter 38 - Drowning in Darkness

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:33:05

Wren sat beneath the warm spray of the shower, her skin flushed pink from the heat, but she barely felt it. The water cascaded over her naked body, a relentless stream that did nothing to wash away the torment that consumed her mind.

Does she really have a picture left? Wren’s thoughts spiraled, each one more suffocating than the last. What if it really gets posted tomorrow?

Her chest tightened with fear, an unbearable weight pressing down on her. What did I do so wrong to deserve all this? The question echoed in her mind, unanswered and unanswerable, as her body began to shake uncontrollably. Sobs wracked her small frame, her cries lost in the sound of the water. She pulled her knees to her chest, hugging them tightly, as if trying to hold herself together while everything around her seemed to fall apart.

The sadness, a relentless tide, crashed over her, pulling her deeper into despair. I just want to die. Then this will all be over. The thought was sharp, sudden, and terrifyingly clear.

A knock at the door jolted her from the darkness.

“Sunshine… are you okay?” Connor’s voice was soft, filled with concern.

Wren’s heart clenched, guilt twisting in her stomach. She tried to steady her voice, fighting to keep the tears at bay. “Yes, I’m fine. Just taking a shower. I’ll be done soon.”

“Okay,” Connor replied, though his tone carried a hint of doubt. “I’m making you some food.”

“Okay… thanks,” she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Don’t be too long.”

“I won’t.”

She listened as his footsteps retreated, her tears beginning to flow once more. I don’t deserve him, she thought, the pain in her chest growing unbearable. He is too good for me. I need to disappear from his life so he can be happy.

Dark thoughts swirled around her, a storm she couldn’t escape. I will end this. It’s the only way.

Moving on autopilot, Wren stepped out of the shower, the water still running behind her. She searched through the bathroom, her hands trembling until they found the cold, sharp edge of a metal nail file.

This should work. The thought was distant, detached. I’m sorry, Connor, but I can’t live like this anymore.

Without hesitation, Wren pressed the nail file against the inside of her left wrist. The metal bit into her skin, and small droplets of blood welled up to the surface. She pressed harder, dragging the file upward, the jagged edge tearing through her flesh. The blood came faster now, spilling from the wound in thick rivulets, and Wren’s head began to spin. The room blurred around her, and then everything went black as she collapsed onto the cold tile floor.

Minutes passed, though to Connor, it felt like a lifetime. Anxiety gnawed at him, a sense of dread he couldn’t shake. He knocked on the bathroom door, his heart pounding in his chest. “Sunshine, what’s taking you so long?”

Silence was his only answer, broken only by the steady sound of the running shower. The unease in his gut deepened. Something doesn’t feel right, he thought, his mind racing.

He knocked again, harder this time. “Sunshine… sunshine, answer me!”

When there was still no response, panic surged through him. He sprinted to his dresser, grabbing the spare key to the bathroom, his hands shaking as he fumbled to unlock the door. The second he turned the handle and pushed the door open, the sight that greeted him stole the breath from his lungs.

“Sunshine… sunshine… no!” His voice broke as he saw Wren lying on the floor, blood pooling around her arm. Her skin was pale, her body still.

Connor dropped to his knees beside her, tears streaming down his face. “What did you do?” His voice was a whisper, choked with fear and heartbreak.

With trembling hands, he pulled her close, desperately checking for any sign of life. Her pulse was faint, but it was there. Connor’s mind raced as he grabbed a towel and pressed it against the wound on her wrist, trying to staunch the flow of blood. He couldn’t lose her—not like this, not when he hadn’t even had the chance to save her from the darkness she’d been drowning in.

“Stay with me, Sunshine,” he pleaded, his voice thick with emotion as he reached for his phone with his free hand, dialing for help. “Please… don’t leave me.”
