Chapter 78 - Unspoken Feelings

Rex watched as Riley stormed off, his expression turning awkward as he glanced back at Stormi and Wren. “Umm…seems it’s my cue to get going.”

Stormi sighed, her frustration evident. “Ughh…sorry about him.”

Wren shook her head, trying to lighten the mood. “Sorry, Rex, he’s a pain like that sometimes.”

Rex shrugged, giving Stormi a reassuring smile. “No big deal.” He paused, his gaze lingering on Stormi for a moment before he added, “I’ll see you later.”

Stormi’s usual confidence seemed to waver as she turned slightly shy. “Umm…okay, see you later. I better go check on Riley. Bye.” With that, she hurried off, her face a bit flushed. Rex watched her go, an amused smile playing on his lips.

Wren had been observing the exchange closely, and the way Stormi had reacted didn’t escape her notice. Uh-oh, she thought, Stormi might be in for some trouble in the near future.

Clearing her throat, Wren decided to shift the focus back to herself. “Well, you can tell Connor you checked in on me and I’m fine so far.”

Rex chuckled, shaking his head. “I will…you know he worries. Bye, catch you later.”

Wren laughed, the sound lightening the air around them. “He’s worse than my mother. See you later, Rex.”

As Rex walked away, Wren’s thoughts quickly shifted back to her friends. She hurried to catch up with Stormi and Riley at the campus cafeteria, but as she approached, she noticed something was off. Riley and Stormi were talking back and forth, and it didn’t look like a friendly conversation. Riley looked irritated, while Stormi seemed upset—almost like they were arguing.

“Hey, you two, what’s wrong?” Wren asked, her voice cutting through the tension.

“Nothing,” Riley snapped, his voice laced with anger. “I’m going to get food.” Without another word, he turned and walked off, his frustration palpable.

Wren frowned, turning to Stormi. “What is wrong with him? Did he tell you?”

Stormi shook her head, her sadness evident. “No, he didn’t.”

Wren eyed her friend carefully, sensing there was more to the story. “Are you sure you’re not hiding anything from me?”

“No, no I’m not,” Stormi insisted, her tone defensive.

Wren raised her hands in a placating gesture. “Alright, don’t get all huffy about it.”

Stormi’s shoulders slumped, the fight seeming to drain out of her. “Let’s just eat…okay.”

~ 10 Minutes Before Wren Showed Up ~

Stormi had run after Riley, her concern growing with each step as she caught up with him outside the campus cafeteria.

“Hey, Riley!” she called, her voice carrying a mix of worry and frustration.

Riley stopped abruptly and turned around, his expression dark. “What?”

Stormi was taken aback by his tone but pressed on. “What is wrong with you?”

“Nothing!” Riley shot back, his voice sharp.

“Then why are you acting angry and talking to me like that?” Stormi demanded, refusing to back down.

“I just am,” Riley muttered, avoiding her gaze.

Stormi huffed, crossing her arms. “Stop being a baby and just tell me what’s wrong.”

Riley’s eyes flashed with anger, her words hitting a nerve. “A baby? Is that what you see me as?”

Stormi was confused by his reaction, the venom in his voice making her heart pound. “Are you mad at me?”

“No!” Riley’s voice was loud, almost too loud, like he was trying to convince himself as much as her.

Stormi’s gut told her something was really off, and she had a sinking feeling it had to do with her somehow. “Yes, you are! Why?”

Riley’s thoughts churned, a battle raging inside him. He was nervous, his mind racing as he tried to find the right words, but finally, they burst out of him in a rush. “Because—”

He hesitated, the words hanging in the air between them. “Because I can’t stand seeing you with Rex!”

Stormi blinked, taken aback. “What? Why would that bother you?”

Riley clenched his fists, struggling to keep his emotions in check. “Because...I care about you, okay? More than I should! And seeing you with him—it drives me crazy!”
