Chapter 46 - The Night’s Embrace

The house was quiet, save for the gentle hum of the night air filtering through the window. Connor and Wren lay in peaceful slumber, the day’s trials temporarily set aside. But tranquility was short-lived.

A piercing cry shattered the silence, followed by desperate screams that echoed through the house.

“No…don’t you dare! Stop…I said stop, you son of a bxxxx!”

Connor’s eyes shot open, his heart pounding in response to the distressing sounds. Instinctively, he sprang from the bed and raced toward Wren’s room. The familiar terror of her nightmares was back, a reminder of the struggles they had been trying to overcome.

He burst into her room, the scene before him striking a chord of urgency. Wren was tangled in her sheets, her body wracked with fear. Without hesitation, he lay down beside her, wrapping her in his protective embrace.

“Shhh… It’s okay. It’s okay, Sunshine. I’m here, and no one can hurt you.”

Connor gently rocked back and forth, his voice a soothing anchor in the tempest of her nightmare.

Wren’s cries continued, but her eyes were squeezed shut in a desperate attempt to escape the horror of her dreams. “No…no…don’t touch me!”

“It’s your Connor, Sunshine. It’s not Trevor. Wake up and see it’s me… Connor.”

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, revealing tear-streaked cheeks and hair matted from tossing in the bed. The recognition of Connor’s presence brought a strange, calming relief. Despite the confusion and fear, her body began to relax in his arms. The comfort of his touch was unexpected, a sensation she should have been repelled by but instead found almost reassuring.

“There…there… everything is okay now. See, it’s just me.”

Wren’s voice was muffled, her embarrassment mingling with her lingering fear. “I’m sorry to cause you trouble.”

Connor brushed a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb, the tenderness of the gesture surprising them both. “You know I don’t find you troublesome.”

Wren’s heart raced at the intimacy of his touch, an unfamiliar yet strangely comforting sensation. Connor’s gaze was soft, his concern evident as he continued to offer solace.

“Do you want me to sleep with you here tonight?” Connor asked gently, hoping to provide her with the reassurance she needed.

Wren hesitated, her thoughts a jumble of uncertainty. “Umm…I don’t know.”

Connor’s smile was warm, filled with understanding. “Then I’ll take that as a yes. Let’s use this as our first assignment from the doctor.”

Wren’s reluctance gave way to a reluctant acceptance. “Umm… okay. I guess it’s alright.”

“Come here and let me hold you. You’ll be safe that way,” Connor murmured, guiding her closer.

Wren settled back into his arms, the initial uncertainty giving way to a tentative trust. She wasn’t entirely sure if this was the right decision, but she was willing to give it a try. Connor’s arms around her were both a source of comfort and a reminder of the delicate steps they were taking toward healing.

As Wren nestled into his embrace, Connor silently smiled, a small laugh escaping him. It was a modest victory, but a victory nonetheless. The warmth of having her close, feeling her breath against his chest, brought a sense of peace he hadn’t felt in a long time. He was grateful for this moment, hoping that the serenity they shared in the night would endure, a beacon of hope amidst their ongoing struggles.

With Wren finally calm in his arms, Connor drifted into a contented sleep, his heart full of hope for the future and a quiet belief that, together, they could navigate the path to healing.
