Chapter 13 - A New Beginning

Wren lay atop Connor, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the night air cool and heavy with tension. Connor's arms were wrapped around her, his grip firm and unyielding.

"Let me go," Wren demanded, her voice strained with both physical and emotional exhaustion.

"No, I won’t," Connor replied, his tone resolute. He tightened his hold, sensing the urgency in her voice.

Wren struggled against him, trying to break free. "I said let me go!" she repeated, her voice breaking with desperation.

Connor's arms held her firmly. "Not until you promise me that you won’t hurt yourself."

"That’s none of your business," Wren snapped back, anger and frustration lacing her words.

"Yes, it is my business," Connor insisted, his voice calm but unwavering. "Promise me first, and then you can go. But you need to listen to what I have to say."

Wren realized the futility of her struggle. Connor wasn’t going to let go until he had his promise. With a heavy sigh, she conceded. "Fine… I promise."

Connor released her, but as Wren attempted to stand, he reached out and grasped her hand. "Why are you holding my hand?" she asked, bewildered.

"So you won’t run off," Connor said simply.

Wren sighed in resignation. "I won’t run. What do you want to say?"

Connor finally looked at her properly, his heart sinking at the sight of her battered form. Dark bruises marred her throat, her eyes were swollen and red from crying, and her clothes were torn. Anger surged through him at the thought of Trevor's brutality.

"Are you okay? Let me take you to the hospital," Connor urged, his voice filled with concern.

Wren’s eyes widened in fear. "No… no, we can’t go to the hospital."

"Why not? You need to be checked and bandaged up," Connor said, trying to reason with her.

"No… absolutely not! No one can know what happened," Wren insisted, her voice trembling.

"Okay, calm down. At least come with me, and let me clean you up and bandage your wounds," Connor proposed gently.

Wren hesitated, her trust in Connor wavering despite his past kindness. Riley’s big brother had always been decent to her, but could she really rely on him now?

"Can I trust you?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Of course you can. Didn’t you hear what I said to you?" Connor replied, earnest.

"You mean your confession?" Wren asked, her heart pounding.

Connor blushed, his cheeks reddening. "It’s not exactly how I wanted to tell you."

Wren’s gaze fell, a mix of shame and disbelief clouding her thoughts. "I’m not worthy of your love."

"You will always be worthy," Connor said firmly. "Let me prove that I can take care of you."

Wren shook her head. "You’ll regret it."

"No, I won’t," Connor countered, his voice filled with conviction.

Wren tried to push him away, hoping to convince him he deserved someone better. "I was raped. Not once, but twice by Trevor. Tonight was the second time. Trust me when I say you deserve better."

Connor’s face darkened with upset. "None of that matters to me. It’s not your fault."

"How can you say that?" Wren’s voice was a whisper, filled with disbelief.

"Because I love you no matter what your past has been," Connor said gently.

Wren stood there, stunned. How could he still love her after everything? Could she trust his words?

Connor stepped closer, his eyes filled with a pleading intensity. "Please trust me and let me take care of you from now on. I promise I won’t ever hurt you and will only bring you happiness."

Wren’s resolve wavered as she considered his offer. "I don’t know if I can love anyone again or even be in a relationship. Are you okay with that?"

Connor’s response was filled with sincerity. "As long as you’re willing to try; that’s all I ask."

Wren nodded quietly, her voice barely audible. "Okay."

Connor’s face lit up with a mix of relief and joy. He wrapped her in his arms, holding her close. For the first time that night, there was a glimmer of hope in the embrace of someone who truly cared. He held her tightly, his heart swelling with the realization that she was finally willing to let him in.

In that tender moment, amidst the lingering traces of the storm, the promise of a new beginning hung in the air, fragile but palpable. For both Wren and Connor, it was a step toward healing and a chance to rebuild what had been shattered.
