Chapter 109 - Growing Up and Growing Closer

Three years had flown by in the blink of an eye, and the children of Wren and Conner, Stormi and Rex had grown into delightful, spirited little beings. On this sunny afternoon, the backyard was filled with laughter and playful banter as the kids prepared for an outing to the playground.

Riley, the energetic daughter of Wren and Conner, was in the middle of a squabble with Sky, the cheeky son of Stormi and Rex. Sky had managed to grab a doll from Riley’s grasp, and an impromptu tug-of-war ensued.

“Hey, give that back!” Riley demanded, her small face scrunched up in frustration.

“I don’t want to,” Sky retorted, holding the doll above his head.

Rowan, Riley’s older brother, stepped in and swiftly snatched the doll back. “That’s my sister’s doll,” he said firmly.

Sky scowled. “Hey!”

Rowan handed the doll to Riley with a gentle smile. “Here, sis.”

Riley’s face brightened as she accepted the doll, turning to stick her tongue out at Sky. “Huh…my brother is better than you.”

Sky’s grin widened mischievously. “I was just joking.”

Rowan gave Sky a stern look. “You should play nice with girls.”

“I was just teasing her,” Sky protested, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Besides…” He turned to Riley, his voice dropping to a playful whisper. “She will be my wife someday.”

Riley’s eyes went wide with shock. “Who will be your wife?”

“You,” Sky smirked confidently and then ran towards his mother.

Riley’s face flushed bright red, her cheeks matching the color of her favorite dress. She buried her face into Rowan’s chest, trying to hide her embarrassment. The truth was, despite her protests, she thought Sky was pretty cute too.

Wren, who had been watching the scene unfold from the doorway, stepped outside with a warm smile. “What’s my beautiful children up to?”

Riley scampered over to her mother, her face still slightly red. “Nothing, Mama.”

Stormi, who had been carrying Sky in her arms, set him down with a chuckle. “Are we ready to go to the playground?”

Sky puffed out his chest and wiggled free from Stormi’s hold. “Put me down. I’m a big boy now.”

Stormi laughed. “Yes…yes you are a big boy.” She set him down gently.

Rowan looked up at his mother with a proud smile. “We are ready to go, Mother.”

Wren ruffled Rowan’s hair affectionately. “Okay, my big boy. You’re just like your father, so responsible.”

Riley tugged on Wren’s skirt, her eyes wide with determination. “Mama, put me down. I want brother.”

“Alright,” Wren said, bending over as she set Riley down next to Rowan.

Riley eagerly took Rowan’s hand. “I’m ready.”

Rowan squeezed her hand gently. “Let’s go.”

Stormi glanced at the scene with a knowing smile. “He is like a mini adult.”

Wren laughed softly, shaking her head. “I think he’s more grown-up than me.”

Sky, not wanting to be left behind, started running after the siblings. “Hey, wait for me!”

Riley, turning her head with a cheeky grin, stuck her tongue out at Sky. “Who wants to wait for you?”

The small group set off towards the playground, their laughter and chatter creating a joyful soundtrack for the sunny afternoon. The scene was a perfect snapshot of family life—filled with playful banter, sibling rivalry, and a deep, unspoken bond of love that bound them all together.

As they made their way to the playground, the children’s excitement grew palpable. It was a day of simple joys and the beginning of countless adventures to come.
