Chapter 37 - Unfinished Business

The atmosphere in Sara Rumley's living room was thick with tension, like the calm before a storm. Wren stood close to Connor, her heart pounding in her chest, while Rex remained vigilant, his eyes never leaving Sara. The situation was on the brink of exploding, and everyone in the room knew it.

Sara’s voice cut through the silence like a knife. “Don’t think you can have your way, slut!”

Connor’s anger flared immediately. “How dare you talk to her like that!”

Sara smirked, unfazed by his fury. “I can say whatever the hell I want. Do you know what she did?”

“I don’t need to know,” Connor shot back, his voice dangerously low.

Before Sara could respond, Wren stepped between them, her voice trembling with frustration. “Shut up, both of you!”

Rex took a step forward, his tone firm but calm. “We’re here for the pictures, miss. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

Connor’s eyes locked onto Sara’s, his expression cold and unyielding. “Give us your phone and delete all the pictures.”

“And if you have them saved elsewhere,” Rex added, “delete those too.”

Sara’s confidence didn’t waver. “Or what? You can’t do anything to me.”

With a defiant smirk, Sara pulled out her phone and held it up like a weapon. “All I have to do is hit send, and everyone will know about your dirty past, Wren.” She laughed, the sound chilling and mocking.

Connor’s eyes narrowed, his anger boiling over. “I dare you to try it. You’ll pay for the rest of your life.”

Wren, her voice rising in desperation, shouted, “Give us the pictures now!”

Connor’s voice was ice-cold, his threat laced with venom. “I will make your whole family bankrupt. Then you’ll know what true hell is while you rot in jail.”

For the first time, Sara’s bravado faltered, a flicker of fear crossing her face. “You can’t do anything to me,” she stammered, but the uncertainty in her voice was evident.

Connor’s gaze didn’t waver. “Try me, and you’ll see what I can or can’t do.”

Wren’s patience snapped. “Delete the pictures now!”

While Connor and Wren kept Sara distracted, Rex silently moved behind her. In one swift motion, he snatched the phone from her hand.

“Hey, asshole! Give that back now!” Sara screamed, lunging for the phone.

But Connor was faster. He grabbed her arm, pulling her back with a force that made her stumble. Rex didn’t waste any time—he deleted every file and picture on the phone, his expression unreadable as he worked. Once he was sure it was all gone, he tossed the phone back at Sara, who fell to the floor in a heap as Connor released her.

“Let’s go,” Connor said, his voice tight with resolve.

Wren nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. “Okay.”

As they turned to leave, Sara’s voice, now laced with malice, called out. “It’s not over. I gave a friend one of your pics just in case. She’ll post it tomorrow, and the whole school will know what a slut you are.”

Wren froze, her eyes widening as the words sank in. She turned to face Sara, her voice shaking. “I don’t believe you.”

Sara laughed, the sound cruel and victorious. “Believe what you want, then. I don’t care… I still win!”

Connor and Rex, already halfway to the door, turned at the sound of Sara’s laughter. Connor’s eyes narrowed as he caught the last of Sara’s words. “Believe what?”

Wren quickly shook her head, forcing herself to stay calm. “Nothing… let’s go.”

The three of them left the house in silence, the weight of Sara’s final words hanging heavy in the air. They drove back to Connor’s house, the tension between them thick and unspoken.

When they arrived, Connor turned to Wren, his voice softening. “You can rest now. It’s all over.”

Wren nodded, but there was a hollowness in her eyes that Connor couldn’t ignore. “Okay… I’m going to shower and rest some.”

Connor watched her carefully, his worry deepening. “Okay, I’ll check on you in a few after I talk to Rex.”

Wren managed a small, unconvincing smile. “Okay.”

As she walked away, Connor’s unease grew. Wren seemed more troubled than relieved, her shoulders slumped with an invisible weight.

Rex, sensing the shift in Connor’s mood, asked, “Everything okay?”

Connor snapped out of his thoughts, forcing himself to focus. “Yeah… just thinking.”

But even as he said it, Connor knew there was more to this than Wren was letting on. Something about Sara’s parting words had struck a chord deep within her, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
